Flower styling

How to style your flowers

There are lots of different ways to arrange flowers for your home but the main thing to think about before starting is finding the right vase for them. This will really depend on what you have in your home.

We’re going to teach you two different ways that you can design your florals, firstly with a medium vase and secondly into smaller mixed vases.

Styling the flowers into one vase:

  • Firstly find a vase that’s half the height of the letterbox, this size will be perfect for your blooms. Use (if you can) a vase with a narrower neck as you’ll find this style of vase will support your flower stems better.
  • Clean your vase, add fresh water and the flower food to the instructions on the packet.
  • Trim 3-4cm off the end at an angle, do this before you place a flower or foliage stem into your vase and strip off any leaves or foliage that will go in the water of your vase.
  • Start by placing the foliage in. If it’s going to been seen all round, arrange the foliage to make a circle shape when looking down on it. This will give you a good base and support network for you blooms.
  • Next find your infill flowers, these are the ones that have branching stems or lots of heads on them. Add your infill flowers in placing them equally around.
  • Following this, it’s your focal flowers, these are flowers like Roses, Peonies, Carnations or any flower that has one beautiful principal head to the stem. Again add these in around your infill flowers all the way round the middle of your design.
  • Now you’ve finished creating your vase arrangement, find the perfect spot to place it and enjoy your blooms.

TOP TIP – Make sure to keep topping the water up in your vase on a daily basis and change it completely adding new flower food every 3rd day.

Styling your flowers into multiple vases:

  • Gather all your vases together, they don’t need to match and can be different shapes and sizes. Make sure they are clean and use a jug to mix together fresh water and your flower food. Decant this onto all your vases.
  • Decide where you want to put your vase clusters and place your vessels in the spot.
  • TOP TIP – place larger vases towards the back and smaller containers at the front if it’s only being seen from one side or if it’s being seen from different angle scatter heights and sizes randomly which will create interest.
  • Just like if you were making one big arrangement it’s still important with bud vases to cut each flower stem before you place it in! Take 3-4cm off the end and cut at a sharp angle.
  • Start by placing your foliage in and then add in all the different flowers at different heights to create interest.
  • If you have any shorts stems which may be pieces/stems/blooms that have accidentally broken or that you’ve taken off a larger stems don’t forget you can use these in the smaller containers.

However you choose to style your flowers, whether its keeping them as one family in one vase or creating clusters or groupings of lots of vases do make sure to stop and smell the flowers as they continue blooming for you.
